Greek: Symbols and Motifs

Ornamental motifs were used often in Greek architecture, and sometimes painted to enhance their beauty.  Like other societies, they originated from nature.  Some include the acanthus leaf, palmette, anthemion, lotus bud, honeysuckle vine, antefix, rosette, scroll and rinceau.  There were also motifs that were more geomtric, inlcuding the fret, guilloche, dentil, egg and dart and swastika.  They also used animals in some designs.
